Broadcast Leadership Academy
July 11-17, 2009 -- Springfield, MO -- Cost: $2,300 per team of four (one teacher, three students)

For the first time, Camp STN is hosting a workshop designed to train high school students and teachers at the same time, providing the ultimate experience in teambuilding, with an emphasis on leadership skills that apply to scholastic broadcast production challenges.

The camp is open to ONE teacher and THREE students from each school. All teams must stay on campus at Drury University. Adults will lodge with other adults, and students will lodge with other students. Adult supervision will be provided in the dorm at all times.

We begin with a mixer and orientation on Saturday night, July 11, at 6 p.m. We will conclude by 2:30 p.m. on Friday, July 17. (Note: This camp requires ten teams of four. It also requires one teacher and three students per team. We do not want a "fill-in" teacher. Please send the regular broadcast teacher with your students.)

Our goal is to provide a fast-paced week for teachers and students who want to get on the same page, and take their school shows to the next level. We will work with you to overcome your challenges, discover new ways to enhance your productions, and give you some fresh approaches to consider as your return to your home school ready for your best broadcast year ever. Most of all, we will help teachers and students become a better team.

The camp will be divided by show type:
  • Daily (Live or Taped) Programs: Dr. Wes Leggett (Biography)
    Units to be covered:
    • Control Room and Studio Setup
    • Teleprompting and Graphics
    • Talent and Technical Positions
    • Show Format and Structure
    • Topics and Segments
    • Live Guests
    • Class Management and Student Leadership

  • Weekly or Bi-Monthly Programs: Brian Shipman (Biography)
    Units to be covered:
    • Show Planning, Designing
    • Going Beyond the Obvious
    • Reporting, Writing, and Anchoring
    • Shooting and Lighting
    • Technical Positions
    • Graphics and Audio
    • Staff Management

  • Monthly Programs: Dave Davis (Biography)
    Units to be covered:
    • Show Planning, Designing
    • Finding Fresh Topics
    • In-Depth Stories, Story Structure and Pacing
    • Writing and Research
    • Interviewing
    • Shooting and Editing
    • Teamwork Strategies for Students and Teachers
This divided approach will allow us to work on challenges specific to each school in attendance, BUT, there will be lessons and experiences all camp attendees will share.

Final Cut Pro editing stations are provided and supported. If you edit on another platform, we encourage you to bring one or two systems to camp if you can.

Each team of four should also bring two cameras, tripods, mics (lav mics preferred), tapes, headphones, and any other field production equipment you normally use.

The $2,300 registration per team covers lunch each day, snacks, materials, workshop tee-shirts, and transportation around Springfield and the area for Academy activities. Schools are welcome to provide their own transportation while in Springfield. Teachers may enroll for up to three hours of graduate credit through Drury University.

You may guarantee your place in camp by registering online and paying a $500.00 deposit, which is not refundable after April 1. All payments are due in full 10 days before your camp begins. The first 10 teams to register and provide the deposit will have their spots reserved. Please note that registering online alone does not guarantee your spot. You must submit the deposit or full payment to ensure your place at Camp.
