Products That Are Bad for Your Teeth
Products That Are Bad for Your Teeth
Good oral health is not just about brushing your teeth and going to the dentist regularly, because it is also about what products you expose your teeth to. There are certain products that seem to be harmless, when in fact, they can potentially damage your teeth without you knowing so.
Alcohol
Alcohol has negative effects on the body, and that includes the mouth. Alcohol can dry your mouth, dehydrate you, or limit your saliva output – all these can result into oral problems such as cavities and tooth decays and gum problems such as gingivitis.
Candy
Plaque and food buildup is the primary cause of cavity and tooth decay, and one of the most important factors in this buildup is the amount of sugar and acid involved. The greater the acidic and sugary content, the greater the damage to the teeth.
Citrus
Speaking of acidity, citrus products such as fruits and juices may have dangerous levels of it. Getting your teeth exposed too much to these products may be enough to cause damage, resulting into cavity and tooth decay.
Coffee
Coffee can be a healthy product, but it can also be a dangerous product, because excessive amounts can dry your mouth or stain your teeth. Even if you take coffee in moderate amounts, you may still be at risk of dental problems if you are constantly putting too much sugar into it.
Ice
Ice is not inherently bad, because it is an effective product in cooling your drink. But it becomes a hazard when you put it in your mouth and chew it. This is because of its hardness. Any hard objects that you bite can cause too much stress in your teeth and jaws, possibly resulting into damage.
Potato Chip
When you think about products that may be dangerous for your teeth, potato chips are not some of the first things that come to your mind. They are overlooked causes of dental problems. The amount of starch in junk foods may be enough to damage teeth, and worse, they may even get trapped in your teeth for long periods.
Tobacco
Unlike potato chips, tobacco products are probably some of the first things that come to your mind. Smoking can result into gum disease, and worse, it also reduces your body’s ability to fight such diseases. As if that is not enough, smoking also puts you at risk of various kinds of cancer in the mouth area.
What You Can Do
As much as possible, avoid extremely dangerous products, such as alcohol and tobacco. You can still consume your favorite products with sugar and acid, but moderation is the key word.
The website of Dental Expressions by Dr. Gary Bram features possible solutions to dental problems, including dental implants and cosmetic dentistry procedures. But when you think about it, taking care of your oral health is a more attractive option compared to corrective measures.
